MY STORY: A Journey Through Grief and Transformation

Long before I donned the hats of counselor, coach, and social worker, life threw a series of powerful events my way—none more impactful than my own experience of grief and loss. At just 16 years old, I found myself navigating the tumultuous waters of motherhood, pregnant and unprepared for the storm that lay ahead.

When my son, Jake, entered the world, he seemed like any healthy newborn, full of promise and potential. But just 11 weeks later, everything changed. Jake was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia, and my world shattered in an instant.

In the days that followed his diagnosis, I was thrust into a whirlwind of confusion and despair. With each visit to the hospital, I was met with assurances that everything was fine, that I was merely a new mother overreacting. But deep down, I knew something was terribly wrong. My heart ached as I watched my baby boy decline, feeling utterly powerless against the medical system that dismissed my instincts.

What unfolded was a nightmare that no parent should endure. The pain and grief that enveloped me when Jake passed away at just 11 weeks old are beyond words. In the aftermath, I wore a mask, functioning in life while feeling lost and alone in my sorrow. For years, I carried that weight, often feeling like I was navigating the darkness without a compass.

Yet, amidst this profound loss, hope flickered within me. I sought guidance from a grief specialist who helped me process the trauma, slowly unraveling the knots of pain I had tied within my heart. I faced not only Jake’s loss but also three subsequent miscarriages, each one leaving its mark on my emotional landscape. However, the ember of hope remained, pushing me forward through the darkest days.

Fast forward to 2004, I found myself in Cornwall, where I began to rebuild my life. I learned that while grief may never fully leave, it can transform—becoming less messy and painful over time. Today, I embrace my "griefy days" with acceptance, reflecting on my journey without bitterness. Life is now filled with beauty, and I cherish each moment, taking one day at a time.

Through this journey, I have discovered my new identity. Initially challenging to accept, it now fuels my passion to help others find their own identity after child loss. I work with those feeling stuck in their grief, guiding them towards rediscovering meaning and purpose in life.

Over the past decade, I have immersed myself in an array of coaching and counseling courses, earning certificates, a diploma, and a degree in counseling, as well as a Master's in social work. My therapeutic approach is integrative, tailored to the unique needs of each individual. I’ve spent years working as a one-on-one counselor for a bereavement charity, listening to stories of loss and resilience.

After retraining as a social worker in 2015 and working with the local authority until 2021, I now specialize in supporting children facing emotional challenges. My heart lies in helping those stuck in grief, guiding them towards a renewed sense of purpose and identity.

Together, we can navigate the complexities of grief, finding light in the darkness and creating a path forward. You are not alone, and your story matters.
